Truth - Half Truth / Half Lie - Lie

July 24, 2010

I was at a worship concert this evening - really good. In the middle of it, something my wife said earlier in the day hit me - then I was reminded of something I wrote about last week - and then something really interesting. Of course - you have to either read on or skip to the end to see what that thing was. Please - don't skip to the end, unless you agree to come back to the beginning.

First - the thing I wrote about last week. That's the one about the chicken and the egg. Scientists decided after much research that the chicken had to have come first. The Bible says God created the chicken - and then said be fruitful and multiple, at which point the egg is necessary. So - one can come to the conclusion that the scientist was right - although not for the "right" reason.

Does that make it a truth - a half truth - a half lie - or an outright lie? And as I often ask - who cares and why does it even matter?

Well - how about this, which is the part my wife was telling me about:

"And then she understood the devilish cunning of the enemies' plan.By mixing a little truth with it they had made their lie far stronger."

No - not her words. It's from "The Chronicles of Narnia, The Last Battle", by C. S. Lewis.

OK - that makes sense. Some amount of truth mixed in with a lie would tend to make the lie more believable.

A lie with no basis in truth at all takes a whole lot more effort to put together and get a lot of people to accept it.

Unfortunately, unless people really know and understand the truth - it's all to easy to slip in something that's not quite true - and convince people that this is the "truth".

Reminds me of when I was a kid - and used to watch the old Perry Mason TV show. When the witnesses were sworn in, they promised to "tell the truth - the whole truth - and nothing but the truth, so help me God".

Anyway - who really cares about the chicken and the egg? God might - since it's something He told us - and we are taught to not believe Him, but to believe science. For a long time - that the answer wasn't known. Now - it is known, because science figured it out.

So - for the thing that happened during the worship concert. There were some words in one of the songs about Christians being a nation of God. And that got me to thinking about a conversation after a Bible study last year - where we were talking about parallel universes and other things that scientists tell us exist, but they can't really prove it.

They assume that parallel universes exist, because nothing else (in their opinion) can explain why their equations of how things work - don't explain how they really do work. Sounds confusing - but what it comes down to is that they are explaining the difference between the way the world really is and the way their models say it is. There's an interesting write-up at docuwiki.net - it's simple. but makes the point.

This particular article starts off with "Everything you're about to read here seems impossible and insane, beyond science fiction. Yet it's all true".

Wow - that could be said of the creation account of Genesis as well!

It could be more than just creation though. Ever wonder what happened to the Garden of Eden? I have. Especially since it's supposedly somewhere out in the deserts of the middle east. How could there possibly be a Garden of Eden out there that no one has found?

What if it's in a parallel universe?

Genesis 3:21-24 says -

And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

So - there's a garden - cherubim - and a flashing sword - and no one can see it? Get real. Obviously it's all made up. So we're told. Science says the world was created by a big bang (or something else, depending on when you went to school). And if God didn't create the universe, then the Garden of Eden must not exist.

But - here's where we need to ask - is this the truth - a half truth - a half lie - or an outright lie? Is it the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?

Well - it's not quite the whole truth.

Let's start with the creation thing. The same article on parallel universes says -

It all started when superstring theory, hyperspace and dark matter made physicists realize that the three dimensions we thought described the Universe weren't enough. There are actually 11 dimensions. By the time they had finished they'd come to the conclusion that our Universe is just one bubble among an infinite number of membranous bubbles which ripple as they wobble through the eleventh dimension.

Now imagine what might happen if two such bubble universes touched. Neil Turok from Cambridge, Burt Ovrut from the University of Pennsylvania and Paul Steinhardt from Princeton believe that has happened. The result? A very big bang indeed and a new universe was born - our Universe. The idea has shocked the scientific community; it turns the conventional Big Bang theory on its head. It may well be that the Big Bang wasn't really the beginning of everything after all. Time and space all existed before it. In fact Big Bangs may happen all the time.

OMG! Do you realize what they just said?

It may well be that the Big Bang wasn't really the beginning of everything after all.

So - regardless of whether one believes in the big bang or in creation, something existed before that! I've heard that before - that something existed before the universe was created.

It's likely not a coincidence, but a couple days ago, I was showing my wife a different Bible translation from what we usually read for the following:

1 In the beginning existed the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him, and without him was not one single thing made that was made.

It's from Wesleys New Testament - from Chapter 1 of the Gospel of John.

So God & Jesus existed before anything else.

I think I've heard that before too. Like maybe in Genesis, where God created the universe.

There's that pesky creation thing again.

Huh - so science and the Bible agree yet again! Except for who gets the credit.

But wait - there's more!

Of course this extraordinary story about the origin of our Universe has one alarming implication. If a collision started our Universe, could it happen again? Anything is possible in this extra-dimensional cosmos. Perhaps out there in space there is another universe heading directly towards us - it may only be a matter of time before we collide.

So - the world's going to come to and end. But when that happens, two universes will collide - destroying them, presumably - and another universe is going to be created.

OMG again! That sounds incredibly familiar too!

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

The first Heaven - and the first earth - both gone. And in their place - the new Jerusalem. Sound familiar? Two universes gone after colliding - and a new one in their place.

The Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth. Truth - half truth / half lie - all lie.

But wait - keep reading and find out that there's more!

By now, I hope that if you're a believer in the big bang theory of creation - you've seen enough to want to know more. There's a lot of truth in what science teaches about creation - and about what existed before creation of this universe that we call home. As I study more, coming from the side of a believer of what the Bible says - I am learning that science isn't as far off as I used to think. More and more - I'm realizing that maybe the biggest difference is whether or not God gets the credit He deserves.

I promised there would be more. Remember the earlier question about the Garden of Eden - where is it and why can't we see it, especially if it's right here on this earth!

Is it because it never existed - or will this same article on parallel universes provide the answer? How's this?

Scientists now believe there may really be a parallel universe - in fact, there may be an infinite number of parallel universes, and we just happen to live in one of them. These other universes contain space, time and strange forms of exotic matter. Some of them may even contain you, in a slightly different form. Astonishingly, scientists believe that these parallel universes exist less than one millimetre away from us. In fact, our gravity is just a weak signal leaking out of another universe into ours.

OMG yet again!!

A parallel universe that's less than one millimeter away from us. And we can't see it! We could be standing right in the middle of it and not even know. And isn't that what the Bible says? It doesn't say that God destroyed the Garden of Eden - or moved it - or took it off the earth - just that He is guarding it so we can't get into it.

Just how many Biblical Truths is this one parallel universe thing going to answer?

Well - how about another one? From the same paragraph above?

Ever wonder where your eternal soul is? How can an eternal soul be housed in these so un-eternal bodies that we have? And then there's a whole bunch of other questions like that which I could raise.

But - what if the answer is already given by the very scientists who are working so hard to prove that God didn't create the universe and doesn't even exist? Can parallel universes answer all those questions too?

Is God really with us, like He promised in John 14:15-21 -

“If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.”

Think about the implications of this. It's staggering.

Some Christians just believe - because our Father told us these things in the Bible and He wouldn't lie to us.

Others, like Thomas did after Jesus rose from the dead, want proof.

Science may very well have the proof. But they don't understand what it means.

And Christians so often distrust science (as I did) because we think it’s contrary to what we believe.

But again - the more I study them - the more I come to believe that the biggest difference is who gets credit.

So - we have to ask ourselves - or we should ask - who stands to gain from God not getting credit?

It's not the scientist. It's not like any scientist alive today is going to take credit for creating the universe.

It's certainly not the Christian - because we want God to get the credit for His creations.

Who then? Who mixes the Truth with the lie and comes up with the believable half truth / half lie? C. S. Lewis says it's the enemy - Satan. The Bible says it's the enemy - the serpent - Satan.

Instead of being afraid of science - or being against it - we Christians should come to understand it - and understand what we believe in - what the Bible truly says - and realize just how much we all have in common. And realize where the real difference is.

And - maybe most importantly, realize who the real enemy is. The real enemy isn't the one who sees that things aren't really as they seem - who has come up with the concept of parallel universes, but doesn't understand the implications of what they have come up with.

No - the enemy is the one who prevents the scientist from, as Jesus says so often, having the eyes to see -the one who prevents them from having the wisdom and knowledge of the Truth to understand what Christians accept by faith.

If these two could get together - scientists could be the doubting Thomas-es of our day.

Anyway - back to the original thought about the nation of God. To tell the truth, when I started writing tonight - this isn't even close to where I thought I'd end up. I was going to do something related to my current series on "Inside the Revolution". Something about how we can be a nation of God inside the parallel nation of the United States of America - or inside Canada, or China, or whatever country we live in.

Obviously, it changed. It got much bigger - and turned scientific instead of political.

But I guess that's part of being open to what God wants.

And if you've read this far, and you're not a Christian - maybe you're looking for Him. Let me tell you - He's looking for you too. And He's got plans for you too - if you're open to what He wants. And if you're into the world of science and all of this has got your attention - then I'd say that you are probably the reason I'm writing this tonight. Knock on His door - it's right there next to you, maybe in a parallel universe that's less than a millimeter away. He'll open it. And when you accept Jesus - there's gonna be one heck of a party - maybe in that parallel universe on the other side of the door that's maybe a millimeter away.

Go for it.
