Knee Deep In Monsters

When you’re knee deep in alligators

it’s hard to remember that your original task was to drain the swamp!

Jesus Calms the Storm

Mt 8:23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.

Mt 8:24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.

Mt 8:25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

Mt 8:26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

Mt 8:27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

The Faith of the Centurion

Mt 8:5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help.  6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering.”

Mt 8:7 Jesus said to him, “I will go and heal him.”

Mt 8:8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.  9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

Mt 8:10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, “I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.  11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.  12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Mt 8:13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that very hour.

Monsters - alligators - storms - centurions.

Have you figured out the connection?

It goes back to the article from a couple days ago -

Having Peace - With Monsters Under The Bed

OK - there’s one more piece of information that you need here.
Maybe a couple - but they’re related.

The only time I ever had an operation was when I had my tonsils taken out as a kid.

When I was a teenager - while a dentist (not my regular one) was taking out one of my wisdom teeth - in spite of my warning to him about being really sensitive to Novocain - he gave me way too much and they ended running out of the room to get oxygen for me because I was turning gray.  From Novocain - a local anaesthetic.

When I had that wonderful test the doctor schedules you for that wonderful 50th birthday present (I’m being sarcastic here if you haven’t had it yet) - I gave the same warning to the person administering the anaesthetic.  Supposedly - you can stay marginally awake and watch the procedure on the screen.  Needless to say - I didn’t.  He was telling me about a good restaurant to go for my birthday - sounded really nice.  I asked him to write it down and put it in my pocket, because I probably wouldn’t remember.  As he was telling me that I’d be awake and remember it - I was out before he even finished the sentence.  When I woke up - I was sitting in a chair fully dressed and ready to leave.  Huh?  Who dressed me - and when did I move to a chair - and what else happened during that time?

So - there’s some alligators in my past.

Well - they’re coming back.

I’m scheduled for what should be minor surgery this Friday -
I really don’t think I’m worried about the actual surgery.
But the anaesthetic - that worries me.

So - last night in the small group I attend at church -
I explained all this and asked for prayer.

While the person was praying for me -
all the stuff at the beginning hit me -
really hard.

That article about monsters -
I wrote that for someone else.
Someone who worries too much -
about everything.

So in the middle of the prayer -
here’s Bob prating for me to remember that God is fully in control -

And it all comes rushing in.

The article I wrote about worrying too much -
saying that we should trust our Father in Heaven to protect us from the monsters in our lives -
the fact that I’m so deep in the anesthesia alligators that I forget that God is in control -
and that includes the people doing the surgery -
and therefore I shouldn’t be worrying.

And yet - witness the example of the disciples in the boat -
they have Jesus in the boat with them -
and they are afraid.

We -
I -
need to be like the centurion -
having faith that Jesus will do what He said.
I need to have faith that God really is in control.

Maybe things will work out -
nothing at all will happen -
and then I’ve been chasing alligators for nothing -
and worrying about monsters for nothing.

Maybe things really won’t work out -
but -
if God really is in control -
then what happens is His will.
And in that case -
I’ve still been chasing alligators for nothing -
and worrying about monsters for nothing.

Jesus tells us in Luke 12:22-34 -

Do Not Worry

Lk 12:22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.  23 Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.  24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!  25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?  26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

Lk 12:27 “Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!  29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.  30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.  31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Lk 12:32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.  33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.  34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Again -

25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?

What does that mean when the very thing I’m worried about is the possibility that something will go wrong with the anaesthetic?

Chances are - by far - nothing will go wrong.

But I worry anyway.

But to what end?

25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?

Not me.
